Sparring Partners

Sparring Partners : Outsourcing May Not Equal Partnership
Building Operating Management
My latest article was the feature article and appeared on the May 2010 cover. I took a very hard look at what partnership is and isn’t as well as what needs to change in the industry.

Having been on the supplier and the client side in the past, I know that Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) themselves don’t result in performance. While some people like the carrot and stick approach, you need a management approach that uses measurements (and other techniques, not just KPI’s) to get performance. Don’t just rely on a passive performance measurement system. In fact, sometimes KPI’s can even drive the wrong behavior if you aren’t careful. Continue reading »

I had the pleasure of being invited to speak at the 2009 International Maintenance Excellence Conference recently. (IMEC.ca) Here is the blurb:

Do You Want Better Results? Don’t Just Measure Performance, Manage It!
Performance isn’t just about measuring results. You must implement management techniques that use performance measures proactively to drive behaviour and improve results. Start with measurement data and KPI’s, understand their impact on employee and subcontractor behaviour and implement a management approach that influences behaviour and drives results.

The conference is hosted by the University of Toronto’s Centre for Maintenance Optimization & Reliability Engineering (C-MORE) and organized by the publishers of Maintenance Technology Magazine.

Whether you are a facility manager, property manager or a supplier, writing RFP’s, writing responses to RFP’s and evaluating them is an important part of the supplier / client relationship.

This 1 day workshop is being made available to the public for the first time through Conestoga College’s School of Business continuing education in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. The Workshop is based on the upcoming book “Win More Business … Write Better Proposals”. Continue reading »

Day Time Cleaning is gaining ground for several very good reasons, not the least of which is energy savings, which is helping organizations meet their energy objectives for envrironmental stewardship and sustainability.

There are other good reasons to implement day time janitorial service, but there are some important considerations and it takes support at the hightest levels. I have been involved in day cleaning both as a facility manager and  as a janitorial supplier. For corporate facilities in particular, I believe it is a good way to go.

It’s important that you implement it carefully, otherwise it will give you nothing but headaches.

On a forum recently, a Facility Manager was looking for ways to save costs at his facility due to the current economic pressures. He identified a few things he was doing, mostly the common low hanging fruit items, and asked for ideas.

Having  been in that situation as an FM and responded to it as a supplier, I learned that a good source for cost savings ideas can be your suppliers. Yes, it can happen, but you need to approach it properly. Continue reading »
